GIVING ME A SCENE A DAY

GIVING ME A SCENE A DAY

Every morning, we open our eyes with a bit of curiosity on what has happened last night. In the newspaper era a century or more ago, a murder every day would suffice in order to satisfy the novelty-seeking mentality of the public. However, in a world flooded with information, an era when a swipe on the screen is enough to refresh the world, the only thing that we are in awe with is, perhaps, the calamity.

When we are faced with the information on calamity through all kinds of media, which retells the causes and effects of the calamity in a natural humanitarianism language, we are under the impact of calamity image shoot from different distance and angles, again and again, experiencing and ruminating on the distance between calamity and ourselves.  Therefore, a calamity is decomposed into a reality for consumption, and a phenomenon for observation.

What common people can do is to find a critical point between the two, in order to balance the daily self and the anxiety about the unknown.

In this exhibition, we have no intention to create a calamitous vision in a safe space.

It’s just we have turned Between Art Lab, Shanghai into a small ecological laboratory, where any viewing point would lead to a fine critical distance, through the collection and summary of the daily details, the transformation of visual graphics, and the simulation of the inter-reality relation, conducted by the four artists, Zhou Yillun, Ren Jie, TMISM, and Liu Jian.
