MICRO GROUP – PAINTING AND THE TRANSLATION OF MEDIA

We are entering into a “micro” era, and this era restructures the multiple interactions between people and people, people and objects, and people and information through a method of media interaction. This exhibition explores a new exhibition mode, with an aim to conduct a reading test between painting and multimedia communication through the interaction of painting and media.

This exhibition will present the “micro” painting works of such three artists as Hu Yutong, Liu Tongbin and Sun Wenguan, in the creation experience of small-sized works, artists have achieved complete painting experience, and audiences will be invited to use the method of network to transmit the pictures of those works into virtual network for conducting another network translation. During such a course, the micro paintings are transmitted in a standard screen reading size, and in the pixelated network reading experience of the works pictures, the original works and the electronic pictures translated by electronic media produce different reading experiences; in this sense, it reflects a “deception” brought by the virtual world, and at the same time it is also a meaning extension brought by the virtual electronic media. The art noumenon and the extended reading meaning generated in the multimedia era have produced more possibilities, i.e. the experience of reading method is renewed by a new and more powerful medium, and in such a sense, the release of the content and emotion of the works noumenon is reflected in more forms.

In the exhibition, the creation, macro perspective or micro perspective of the artists are all confined in a defined size, which in the course of creation returns to the earliest experience of painting. Liu Tongbin’s paintings are mostly centered on expressive scene painting, and in an obscure and abstract context, we can feel the original creative inspiration and emotional expression of the painting. Hu Yutong’s works have the sensitive nature of a female artist; the specific looks of figures disappear in sentiments and a sentiment of near nothingness and absurdity dominates the tiny picture; and it seems that a sensitive red line exists between plane painting and spiritual emotion. Sun Wenguan’s works are a kind of depiction of objects which is either quietly placed on the paper surface, or makes “enlargement” through this small paper in a more micro perspective and gets a abstract form via this “enlargement”.

This exhibition will invite audiences to make a new network language translation of the works presented in the exhibition, and create a presentation of new exhibition reading. The works to be finally confined will produce different effects synchronously in on-site and off-site ways, and the audiences will generate completely different feelings. The off-site audiences will have a new sense and an understanding over the works through the reading method that is homogenized by network language. We hope to use this exhibition to raise questions: the first is the specific meaning of the on-site sense to the interpretation of art works in modern times of rapid transmitting electronic media, and the second is whether we are looking for the possibility of new reading significance through a virtual or false world. This exhibition aims to provide a new exhibition mode, conducting a simultaneous exhibition of the artists’ works in both on-site and off-site methods; and it will produce a new painterliness and reading possibility with the help of the significance of network “Micro Group.”
