SE-CONTEXT 1984
LITERATURE :SE-CONTEXT 1984

Why is it themed “SE-CONTEXT: 1984”?

China’s contemporary art has finished the long course of western art history rapidly in a burst. From the Cultural Revolution Art to the Trauma Art with a post-Cultural Revolution consciousness, all is closely related to social and political life. Here, “Se-Context” refers to the withdrawing from the ideation that is strongly political and historically solemn among the post-1960s artists. Along with the growth of this generation of artists is the rapid absorption and manifestation of Western Modernism. This exhibition takes 1984 as the title. On one hand, it reflects the abandoning of The Cultural Revolution consciousness and its sequel; on the other hand, the artists of that generation have gone to academies to pursue art learning and creation. The new idea of the 1985 Wave accompanied them in their artistic developments, and in the 1990s, these artists formed their own personal styles and value orientation. Therefore, “Se-Context: 1984”, as a concept and a separate perspective, attempts to present the artists’ original motivations and states of art making in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Because of their constantly improved historical status and their success in the artistic market of today, Literature data and research results about them are abundant; on the other hand, through multiple perspectives, including historical documents, information about their lives, presentation of their works and oral history, we hope that we can restore a relatively authentic appearance of their growth and experience, so as to enrich the historical documents for the research of this important generation of artists.

Currently, we should avoid presenting this exhibition in a critical or evaluative attitude. Instead, we wish to enrich the materials through presenting the documents in a chronological way, so as to provide original material and evidence for future researchers focusing on this period of history. In this exhibition, we try to present historical events of the same time while recorded by different artists and happening in different places, for example, Old Summer Palace, Caochangdi, Sichuan, East Village, etc., in a chronological way. Moreover, we encompass artistic events and important exhibition and forms an event logic. Hopefully, the initiation and development of rich artistic activities in this period will be presented in a very clear way.
